Honda Car Key Replacement: What Type of Key Do You Have?
Honda has used at least four distinct key technologies across its lineup, and knowing which one you have determines exactly what replacement involves. Older Hondas from the mid-1990s through early 2000s used a basic mechanical key — no chip, no remote, just a precisely cut blade. From roughly 2000 onward, Honda began embedding transponder chips inside the key head; the chip must be programmed to match your vehicle's immobilizer, or the engine simply won't start even with a perfectly cut key. Many models then added a remote fob for locking and unlocking, either as a separate key-chain unit or built into the key head itself. Newer Honda models — including recent Accord, Odyssey, and Pilot trims — use a proximity smart key, sometimes called a Honda Smart Entry key, which allows push-button starting as long as the fob is inside the vehicle.
Our mobile locksmith experts carry equipment to handle all of these types.
