Nissan Key Types We Replace and Program Columbus-Wide
Nissan has used several distinct key technologies across its lineup, and knowing which type your vehicle needs is the first step toward getting back on the road. Older Altima, Maxima, and Frontier models from the late 1990s and early 2000s typically use a standard transponder key — a metal-cut key with a small chip embedded in the head that must be paired to the vehicle's immobilizer. Mid-2000s through early 2010s models across the Rogue, Murano, Altima, and Sentra ranges introduced key fobs with separate remote-entry transmitters that can be replaced or re-synced independently of the ignition key. Newer vehicles — particularly the Rogue Sport, Altima Sport, Pathfinder, and Armada from roughly 2013 onward — use an Intelligent Key, Nissan's proximity-based smart key system that allows push-button start and hands-free entry.
Our mobile units carry blank key stock and OBD-level programming tools compatible with all three categories. For transponder keys, we cut and chip-program the new key to match your vehicle's immobilizer — a process that requires specialized equipment, not just a key-cutting machine. For Intelligent Key fobs, we register the new unit to your car's body control module on-site. If your existing key still functions but the remote has stopped working, we can diagnose whether the issue is the fob battery, the fob itself, or the receiver module before recommending a replacement, which saves you from paying for parts you don't need.
